Kyan Quartet

The award-winning Kyan Quartet brings together four exceptional musicians from the United Kingdom, the United States, China, and France. Established in 2020, the quartet enjoys a busy and vibrant career, having performed across Europe and Asia in venues including Wigmore Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Beethoven-Haus Chamber Music Hall, Shanghai Opera House, and Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra Hall.

As first prize winners of this year’s DYNAMIKfest Salzburg Chamber Music Competition, the Kyans are looking forward to touring across Europe and the USA in 2026. They are also prizewinners of the 2024 Royal Over-Seas LeagueCompetition in London. Recent highlights include three performances at the Barbican Centre as part of the Carducci Quartet’s Shostakovich cycle project, guitar quintets at Conway Hall with  Ahmed Dickinson, and a tour across Scotland as Tunnell Trust award holders.  The quartet are grateful to be supported by Le Dimore del Quartetto and City Music Foundation.

The Kyans have held residencies with the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme, Fondazione I Teatri’s Casa del Quartetto and the South Downs Summer Music International Festival. They have won places on prestigious courses, including the 2024 International Beethoven Masterclass in Bonn, Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland’s 70th International Chamber Music Campus, the 49th Musical Artistry Goslar Summer Academy, and Chamber Studio’s inaugural Hans Keller Forum. Through these they have received coaching from all members of the Belcea and Doric quartets, Heime Müller, Günter Pichler, Jana Kuss, Alasdair Beatson and Péter Nagy. The quartet has also been coached by members of the Heath, Jerusalem and Pavel Haas Quartets. They are currently being mentored at the Mozarteum University by Cibrán Sierra Vazquez, Rainer Schmidt and William Coleman.

Naomi Warburton

London-based British violinist Naomi Warburton has a varied career as a chamber and orchestral musician.  When she’s not making music with the Kyan Quartet, she works with orchestras including the Philharmonia and the BBC Symphony, and has a small private teaching practice.  Naomi graduated with a Master’s with Distinction from the Royal Academy of Music in 2023, where she studied with So-Ock Kim.  Highlights from her time there include leading the Academy’s symphony and opera orchestras in multiple projects, collaborating with members of the Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective, and participating in a masterclass with Hilary Hahn.  

Prior to this, Naomi graduated from Clare College Cambridge with a Double First in Music, where she was an award holder on the university’s Instrumental Award Scheme.  Through this, she received coaching from ensembles such as the Endellion and Ligeti Quartets and the Amatis Piano Trio.  Naomi also led multiple orchestras whilst at Cambridge, including the University Opera Society's production of Carmen and Rutter’s Requiem under the composer’s baton.  She has performed as part of various chamber ensembles at the Festival Berlioz in France, and live on BBC Radio 3’s “In Tune” programme.

Sydney Mariano

Filipino-American violinist Sydney Grace Mariano enjoys a varied career in chamber music, orchestral playing, and teaching. She first established herself in Los Angeles, where she performed at venues such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall, recorded sessions in a number of Hollywood spaces like Warner Bros Studios, and made her solo debut with orchestra at the Segerstrom Performing Arts Center. She has performed for a variety of renowned musicians, including Joseph Silverstein, Paul Kantor, Roman Simovic, Emmanuel Borok, and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg.  

In 2019, Sydney came to London, where she graduated with a Masters from the Royal Academy of Music. She is currently enjoying her post-graduate life in London, actively building upon her growing performance career whilst under the mentorship of Ying Xue of the Doric String Quartet. As a member of the Chineke! Orchestra, Sydney has given performances across Europe in world-renowned concert halls such as the Concertgebouw, Elbphilharmonie, and the Royal Albert Hall. Additional successes include performing in the BBC Proms, appearing at the Brit Awards, and recording Max Richter's most recent album of Vivaldi's Four Seasons - Recomposed.

Wanshu Qiu

Actively devoted to promoting classical music to a wider audience, Wanshu regularly performs as a soloist, chamber musician, and has appearance in renowed orchestras and music festivals.

Wanshu Qiu grew up in Chengdu, China, and began to play the viola at the age of 15. She gained her undergraduate degree at the Royal Northern College of Music with Susie Meszaros and Veit Hertenstein, She was then awarded full scholarship and bursaries from the Royal Academy of Music to continue her Master’s and Professional Diploma with Jon Thorne. She has been awarded Barbirolli Evelyn Rothwell Prize for outstanding studentship, and was greatly supported by British Council and Art Association of China for her study.

Simon Guémy

Simon Guémy is a French cellist from Paris. He began playing the cello at the age of seven with Marcel Bardon, and went on to study with Dominique de Williencourt and Juliette Salmona at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris. Simon graduated in 2021 with First-Class Honours in a Bachelors of Music Degree at the Royal Academy of Music in London and is continuing to pursue a Masters in Arts under the tutelage of Robert Cohen and Nadège Rochat. Throughout his time at the Academy, Simon has enjoyed collaborating and performing with others, playing in projects led by Ludovic Morlot, Ryan Wigglesworth, Semyon Bychkov, Timothy Weiss, Edvard Gardner, Marin Alsop and Jac Van Steen. In 2021, Simon was awarded first prize of the Piatti Competition at the Royal Academy.

Simon has taken part in festivals including Aldeburgh festival, Violoncellenseine, Musiques en Vivarais Lignon, Two Moors festival, Timber festival and Borromeo Music Festival, where he had the opportunity to share music with a wider audience. Simon has also had masterclasses with Sun-Wong Yang, Colin Carr, Bozidar Vukotic and Tilmann Wick. Simon has played with many established artists such as Tamara Stefanovich and James Ehnes in beautiful halls across London such as the Royal Festival Hall and Wigmore Hall. He especially enjoys playing a wide variety of cello repertoire, ranging from Gabrieli to today’s composers.

Méline Le Calvez

Originally from France and now based in London, Méline has performed in orchestras all across the UK, including the Royal Opera House Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She’s passionate about chamber music, absolutely adores the bass clarinet, and is often immersed in her Alexander Technique training or practicing historical clarinets.

She completed her Master’s with Distinction at the Royal College of Music in 2023, where she also won the Contemporary Competition with Clare Juan and Ilayda Oğuz.
