Call for new committee members

31/3/2023

Comments

To Members and Friends,

Picture
Looking ahead with excitement to our 50th anniversary season commencing September 2025, in advance of this we are seeking to find some new committee members who will help secure the well being of our Society into the future.

The Whitstable Music Society has acquired an outstanding reputation for the quality of our concerts  and not least with our invited musicians who on many occasions tell us how much they enjoy their  visits to our Music Society.
They frequently comment on how hospitable, friendly, receptive and  attentive you are as an audience, and they have a high regard for our venue with its wonderful acoustics, “perfect for chamber music” they often say.

Curiously these concerts don’t actually organize themselves. Instead there is a small friendly committee who work behind the scenes to make all this happen. Fortunately the work is made to seem quite easy because our committee works well together which  really does make our task enjoyable and not at all like “work”. We tend to meet four times a year in  convivial surroundings.

We are very happy to remain in our current roles though realize we need to continue to plan ahead  for the future wellbeing of the Society. With this in mind we are looking to strengthen our team with  a few more people who would be willing to contribute alongside us, ensuring that we always  have the resources to sustain the activities and reputation of the Society into the future.

The key activities we currently manage are:
  1. Membership and Marketing
  2. Media and publicity
  3. Finance
  4. Concert Planning (Artists and Programmes)
  5. Concert Management (on the days of the concerts)
  6. Sponsorship

So if you think you would be interested in helping the good work of our Society either as part of our committee or perhaps in a more informal way then please contact me for an informal chat.

With all best wishes

John Walker.

Maja Horvat (Violin) and Julia Hamos (Piano)

Picture
A late reminder about our next concert on Saturday 25th March at St John's Church Whitstable at 7.30pm.

We are delighted to welcome Maja Horvat (Violin) and Julia Hamos (Piano) who will be performing the Mozart Violin Sonata K301, the Schubert Fantasie in C major, the Beethoven Violin Sonata No.10 and the Schubert Sonata No.3 in A minor. Any one of these pieces would be worth coming to the concert to hear on its own, but to have all four played on the same evening is definitely not one to be missed!

Maja gave her debut performance at Wigmore Hall in 2021 as first violinist of the Brompton Quartet, of which she is a founding member and with whom she gives frequent world premieres. They won the St Martin-in-the-Fields Chamber Music Competition and have collaborated with record producer Andrew Keener and many other currently active composers. She has performed with some of the world’s most prominent chamber musicians including Sir Andras Schiff, Tabea Zimmerman, Christian Tetzlaff, Vladimir Mendelssohn and Thomas Carroll. In 2019 Maja was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Emily Anderson Prize for an outstanding violinist.

Pianist Julia Hamos combines her American and Hungarian roots with an adventurous spirit to explore the essence of repertoire ranging from Bach to composers living today. Instinctive artistic expression, a forward-thinking attitude, a joyful physical flexibility at the instrument, and an unyielding fascination with the music she plays makes her an artist to watch. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London with Christopher Elton and the Mannes College of Music in New York with Richard Goode, Julia studied with Sir András Schiff at the Barenboim-Said Akademie in Berlin and is now studying at the Kronberg Academy where her studies are generously supported by the Henle Foundation.

Nicholas Mogg and Jâms Coleman

Picture
A slightly earlier reminder than usual about our next concert on Sat 26th November at 7.30pm when Nicholas Mogg and Jâms Coleman will be giving a recital of songs by Vaughan Williams, Karl Loewe, Rebecca Clarke and Robert Schuman amongst others.

Nicholas and Jâms visited us in November 2019 when their recital was very well received by our audience with many requests to have them back again.
Do join us if you can for what promises to be a memorable and enjoyable concert.  Watch on YouTube some of the songs of Karl Loewe.

Worth mentioning, as this is the last concert before Christmas, that one of our members has kindly donated mince pies and Stollen cake for our interval refreshments!

Many thanks also to Sara Wheeler and Samphire Restaurant for sponsoring this concert.

Cordelia Williams (Piano) - Nightlight

Picture
The programme, a live performance of the CD Nightlight by Cordelia Williams.

Polish-Welsh-English pianist Cordelia Williams is recognised for the poetry, conviction and depth of her artistry. She has performed all over the world, including concertos with the English Chamber Orchestra (in Mexico City), City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (at Barbican Hall, London), as well as recitals at Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall and Beijing Concert Hall.
Her 2021 album Nightlight received rave reviews across the board and was awarded Critics’ Choice (International Piano) and Recording of the Year (MusicWeb International).
“Cordelia Williams’ playing is remarkable throughout and is complemented by a superior sound quality. … I enjoyed all the music on this CD. It is a remarkably inspired recital”
—John France, MusicWeb International

“Ranging from Mozart to Bill Evans, this superbly programmed recital explores night and its uncertainties and fears… but with a peaceful ending. Williams is as at home in the wilder moments of Scriabin as she is serenading us with Schumann.” --BBC Music Magazine

Lara Melda (Piano)

Picture
This Saturday sees the final concert of our current season with an all Chopin piano recital from the acclaimed Chopin interpreter Lara Melda.

Lara gave her first public concert at the age of 8 and her debut concerto recital at the age of 12, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto in D minor K466 and Piano Concerto in A major K414.

In 2009 she was a finalist in the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Weimar, Germany.
Lara Melda rose to international prominence in 2010 when she won the BBC Young Musician of the Year at the age of sixteen, performing Saint-Saëns' Piano Concerto No. 2 in the final round, with Vasily Petrenko and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in Cardiff.

Lara is renowned and highly praised for her Chopin interpretations. A performance of Chopin's 2nd Sonata prompted this review: "Unquestionably one of the most outstanding performances of the piece I've ever heard, it evoked its yearning, energy, loneliness, lyricism, fury and gutsiness with playing of stunning precision, technical adroitness and immense, perceptive feeling."

On Saturday evening Lara will be performing an all Chopin Programme beginning with a series of seven Nocturnes followed by the Barcarolle in F sharp major Op.60. After the Interval she will perform the monumental Sonata No. 3 in B minor Op. 58.

Join us for what promises to be a memorable recital.
